Cherokee Indians

The Cherokee Indians lived in the Southeast in villages, in parts of Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina, and were one of the largest tribes there. They were farmers and hunters. They used gourds for containers and wore deerskin clothing. Sequoyah, a Cherokee, created an alphabet for the Cherokee language, making it a written language. With the Indian Removal Act of 1830, the Cherokee were forced to march to Oklahoma on what became known as the Trail of Tears. Many of them died. Wilma Mankiller was their first female chief, chosen in 1987.
