The Houma lived in the Southeast in Louisiana, Mississippi, and along the Mississippi River. They were part of the Choctaw tribe. They encountered the French explorer La Salle. They spoke a Muskogean language. They were farmers, hunters, and they fished. Many died as a result of the smallpox.
